Warts, or verruca, are noncancerous growths that develop when a virus infects the top layer of the skin, known as human papillomavirus (HPV). These viruses are more likely to enter the skin through cuts or damage.
Warts are contagious and can be spread through direct contact or contact with objects that have touched the wart. They typically appear as rough, skin-colored growths, but can also be dark, flat, or smooth in texture.
